Tabletop: Vagrant Star (Starfinder)

This is a game started in 2022! It’s a homebrew STARFINDER adventure that is GM’d by my friend, Jeff! Starfinder is a sci-fi TTRPG, a sister to the fantasy one Pathfinder which I also play frequently. In this game, all the players made their characters and backgrounds, handed them to the GM, who then sculpted a fun story for us.

It all started on Absalom Station…

My character for this campaign is FRANCESCA, aka FRANKIE, BARKFANG. She’s a gnoll envoy with a criminal background. Here is the first reference I drew of her:

Frankie’s history is that she’s the daughter of two major mob bosses on Absalom: the Barkfangs and the Biteclaws. Her mother, Izola, divorced when she was young and went off to form the Biteclaws, but she hasn’t been in contact with her much since. Instead she stayed with her dad, Boz Barkfang, and became a true Daddy’s Girl, where she was spoiled into a rotten brat–much to the annoyance of her brother, Emilio, who always got the shaft (and a fair amount of bullying from Frankie herself). A sibling pair always at odds, it all came to a head when Boz passed away, and the torch was handed to Frankie. But Frankie wasn’t fully prepared for this, after having been spoiled all her life, and under her nose Emilio managed to upend her and land her in jail for a brief period–but just enough to take her spot.

The campaign begins with Frankie pretty fresh out of jail, now at a rock bottom she’s never experienced before. She’s luckily got her, uh, lawyer? To help? And soon runs into a group of other lost individuals who form an unlikely little team (in true tabletop fashion!)

The Crew of the Vagrant Star

The colourful characters Frankie runs into and joins up with are, from left to right here:

  • JD – an endiffian operative, previously a WcDonalds janitor. They do “clean ups” for skeevy folks, and Frankie and them have a… complicated history with each other. (Played by Winter)
  • GLOSS – a vesk soldier, who makes a name for herself on the station doing pitfights, but also has a knack for tinkering with starships, fronting most of the build of the titular Vagrant Star ship the crew uses. (Played by Andrea)
  • JIGSAW – an android mechanic who just woke up one day on a mining ship, and has since made his way to Absalom. A past life he can’t remember plagues him, as he tries to grow into this new life. (Played by Rein)
  • THE INDEPENDENT NATION OF DEMOCRATIC YZZOTRON (INDY) – a spathinae technomancer, and a famous actor! At least, famous for his role as a villain on the math-themed kid’s show, Zoop Zoop Kaboom. Perhaps the strangest member of the crew, but somehow might be the glue that holds it all together. (Played by Tom)

Another character of importance is the GM’s NPC, Reene, a drow pyrate who basically recruited the crew from the get go. I don’t have any art alone of her, but here is a set of animated icons I made of the whole crew, including her:

other characters

This game has something unique to it that our GM implemented, which is contacts. At the start of the game, we were able to create other characters that our main character would be in contact with, who can help us our and give us information. Frankie has two contacts (so far), her goblin lawyer, Mr. Ur N. Goodhands, and her famous streamer cousin, Toni (AKA Tonipizza).

The Adventure so Far…

Since teaming up and fixing up the starship, the crew of the Vagrant Star has left Absalom and started their adventure in the stars. During their time on Absalom, they learned a lot about each other–and Frankie in particular was able to patch up her connections to the mob families again, impressing Gordo Goldcast, the head honcho of the mobs, after getting his starship back when it was stolen by pyrates. Emilio was demoted and Frankie was able to rub it all in his face. But Frankie now has a taste of true adventure, and a glimpse into space pyracy, which sounds cool as hell–so her new goal has been trying to get into that life, while also struggling to take the roll of captain of the crew.

Since then, in “season two” the crew visited Castrovel for a needed vacation, which was interrupted by dinosaurs (naturally). Following a strange map they found in the catacombs of Absalom, they found an underwater temple on the planet, but also had a nasty run-in with dangerous pyrates, who kidnapped Reene. The crew is now on their trail to Akiton, trying to solve the map and get their crewmate back.

Most of these won’t make sense without context but oh well! Enjoy!
