Why?? Why not. I have a few blog posts I’ve got drafted that I feel like are a bit more high stakes so I’m warming myself up by doing the respectable thing of giving my opinion on Pokemon designs<\/em> (everybody cheer!). Why the new Megas? They’re just the newest in the bunch. And I don’t really want to review every single Pokemon<\/em>, so this seems like a good chunk to focus on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway–Mega Evolution! You know, I remember it like it was yesterday… No, no, what do you mean X\/Y is over 10 years old?<\/em> Haha, sorry?! I vividly remember it like it just came out yesterday. Don’t say this to me. The 3DS is a retro console?<\/em> Oh my god–<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Um–Right, Megas. Those were announced in X\/Y, and I remember just how torn the Pokemon fandom was. Because as you know, Pokemon fans love change, and unabashedly love new weird designs, and Megas were the complete package<\/em> so everyone was so excited for it! Okay–they were pretty hated from the start. The heat cooled off once it was revealed these evolutions weren’t permanent<\/em>, but criticism over the designs was still rampant. It wasn’t until Omega Ruby\/Alpha Sapphire, that it seemed to ease up, and as they released a new set of Megas, Pokefans were excited to see how this would shake up each new instalment in the series–<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aaaaand then they stopped making them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

X\/Y, ORAS and Sun\/Moon (though the latter didn’t add any new ones) were the only games to have Mega Evolutions. Not only were there no more Megas, but they were also restricted<\/em> to these games, and not supported in future instalments. Instead, new gimmicks came and went–Z-Moves, Dynamaxing, Terastalization–cementing the fact Pokemon games were instead now focusing on a specific gimmick per game, rather than carrying on that gimmick into future ones. I don’t know how to feel about this choice. On the one hand, it does flavour each game and create a new fun way to engage in battles, but it’s also a bit of a shame to spend all that time learning the gimmick only for it to be shed in the next generation. I feel like the Megas were the greatest loss here (although the Gigantamax forms a close second) as these were special versions certain Pokemon that had new, different designs and abilities. Z-Moves and Terastalization are just battle mechanics, but losing Mega evolutions was almost like losing entire Pokemon<\/em> to future games (and we know they would never do that though<\/em>, would they?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then along came Legends: ZA, and with it, the return of the Megas! Along with a new slew of them. I’ll admit–I’m a bit sad this game only introduced new Megas, and no new regional forms, like Legends: Arceus did. But it was cool to see this mechanic return again, and no longer forgotten in the pits of the 3DS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personally, the Megas were always a mixed bag for me… though I think that’s the case for everyone. In fact, I think that’s just Pokemon in general<\/em>, but maybe that’s what makes it work? There’s a guy for everyone. Megas aren’t quite my vibe, though. Their general design sense seems to be loud, extra, and cool as fuck<\/em>, which can get really overbearing really easily. I do appreciate<\/em> that seems to be the design philosophy for them, though. I can get behind it. In some cases. In others… I don’t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Also why does Charizard get to have two Megas, HUH? I KNOW it’s popular but that’s not fair!!)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wow, I’ve talked a lot about this and haven’t even gotten to the reviews. Alright! Without further ado! Watch out, you’re in for the long haul<\/em> here! Also I guess there’s spoilers<\/strong>, for a game that’s been out for a few months. I don’t go into details but some of the Mega designs are part of the story climax, so you’ve been warned!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mega Clefable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I find I really like the Clefairy line–it’s got a lot of cute charm, with just enough weirdness with its implied alien origins. I don’t know if this Mega does it for me, though. It becomes Fairy\/Flying, which doesn’t really add much to it, and I don’t really get what’s going on with the head and ears. It’s not bad but feels almost unnecessary, which is quite the thing to say for a Mega Evolution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega victreebel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I looove Victreebel, I think it’s a fantastic mon–an evil pitcher plant!<\/em> Sadly, I think this Mega loses a lot of the charm… Victreebel has quite the mean nasty vibe to it that this Mega doesn’t have at all. I miss the little fangs and evil eyes. I appreciate this goes for the goofy<\/em> route, though–Megas tend to skew in the too cool<\/em> territory, so I do love that it went for more fun instead. I also notice the ZA Megas really like to draw from the pre-evolutions of the Mega-evolving Pokemon, like this one–there’s a lot of Weepinbel in here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega starmie<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oh my god, speaking of going the goofy route–yes<\/em>. This thing is incredible. No notes. Completely ridiculous in all the right ways. All I can think of is the boss battle with this thing in ZA, and how it would run really fast at you. Terrifying. A+.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega dragonite<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I have mixed feelings when the pseudo-legendaries get Megas or boosts like this. Do they really need them? Aren’t they powerful enough? Oh well. Maybe Dragonite needed it, it’s been around the block for a while. As I mentioned, lots of Megas in ZA take from the prevolutions, and none is more exemplary than Mega Dragonite here, who clearly takes a lot from Dragonair. A common “complaint” I’d see with Pokemon fans is that Dragonite wasn’t as “pretty” as Dragonair, and that even made it a bad design. I feel like this is Gamefreak trying to appeal to this, maybe? I don’t know how involved they are with fan opinions, so who knows. This guy’s alright. I always like wing-ears.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega meganium<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chikorita is probably my favourite Johto starter (though it’s close–they’re all good), but I wasn’t as much of a fan of Meganium. Still, this line became a bit of the butt of a joke to Pokemon fans for a while, just because it’s… weaker, I guess? I don’t know. For shame, this line rules. This Mega is pretty sweet too (hah, get it?) It gets a Grass\/Fairy typing, and adds just enough to the design without it feeling too much. It does make me sad, though, that Typhlosion got a whole new regional form, but this guy (and Feraligatr) only got Megas, which might not even continue into the new games… I just doesn’t feel right, you know? They gotta be together!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega feraligatr<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Well… first off, I didn’t realize this guy becomes Water\/Dragon<\/em> when it Mega Evolves, and this was my starter in ZA, so… I’m not very observant, I guess. Anyway, yeah, here we are again with prevolutions coming through the design–this image doesn’t show, but when that big red thing on its back flips over, it basically makes it look like a Totodile. I… get that, and it’s a pretty neat concept… but I don’t think it exactly works otherwise. When I thought Mega Feraligatr<\/em>, I was hoping for something toothy, not… Feraligatr with a big weird flap on its back. I guess it’s… different? At least?? I’ll give it that?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega skarmory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whoa<\/em>. Okay. It’s nice seeing static art of this thing, because its a little hard to parse when it’s moving around in-game. I like that it’s golden, and naturally full of extra cool spikes to make it even cooler<\/em>. I guess it’s about what I might expect when I think “Mega Skarmory”, but the talons are crazy. Reminds me of some wading birds and their big long feetsies. Is Skarmory a wading bird? What are you, Skarmory??<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega frosslass<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I think the artwork of this one looks better than the in-game model, but overall this one’s very pretty! Frosslass is based on a Yuki-onna<\/em>, an ice spirit, so it’s awesome her Mega took that even further, although part of me still loves her original form’s kinda gremlin-y-ness as opposed to the more elegant look here. But it’s a nice one, I especially love the ice horns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega emboar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ahh. Hmm. Okay. I’ll be frank–I’m not a big fan of Emboar, or its whole line, in general. It’s alright. It’s just really not my thing. I don’t hate boars, I don’t hate the idea of this mon, it just–doesn’t really jive with me. And Mega Emboar is no exception. It’s just… Emboar. Again. With a staff. It’s fine. If you like Emboar, you probably like Mega Emboar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega excadrill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So I know Megas are meant to be extra, and they aren’t permanent so they’re allowed to be a bit more impractical designs but how does this guy function!!<\/em> Its just got big giant drills on its arms! Look at it!! This guy is gonna turn around because you called “Hey Mega Excadrill!” and it’s gonna knock over all the shit on the table just because its hands grazed over it. And it goes, “Oops! Sorry!” And you go, “Ohh Mega Excadrill!!<\/em>” And a theme song plays and Mega Excadrill shrugs at the camera and a laugh track plays.
Anyway, this guy is just a big drill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega scolipede<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

THIS IS MY BUG. MY SON. LOOK HOW GORGEOUS. Scolipede is one of my favourite Pokemon and this Mega is way too cool<\/em>. Scolipede was already cool–it’s a fucking bug horse–but this was just cranked to fucking eleven. They didn’t even need to do this, but they did<\/em>. I was only unsure about the colour scheme of the added elements before I realized the grey and purple come from Whirlipede, making this another prevolution-element Mega. Rad. Good. This thing fucks.
I had an Alpha Scolipede in my ZA playthrough, which meant when I Mega Evolved her, she was so big she took up most of my screen. Which is just beautiful.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega scrafty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oh Scrafty! I love Scrafty, what a unique idea for a Pokemon–a lizard that uses its shed skin as clothing! Mega Scrafty just rolls with that more, even turning the skin white to really look like a shed reptile skin. It’s a cool Mega, but I’m a little… underwhelmed? I think this looks more like a regional form of Scrafty, rather than a Mega Evolution. That thing needs at least<\/em> 15 more spikes to qualify as a Mega.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega eelektross<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I’m sad by how much I forget about this Pokemon–it’s a freaking electric eel\/lamprey\/windsock?? I think this Mega leans heavily into the whole windsock thing with its arms just becoming more<\/em> windsocks, which yet again resemble its prevolution, Eelektrik, while being the colours of its first form, Tynamo. Admittedly the colour shift is what throws this off for me, it looks more like these are just weird appendages it puts on while it Mega evolves. Like Eelektross just goes “Hold on,” and starts sliding on its new pair of gloves. Maybe it’s meant to represent slime, playing into its lamprey origins? I dunno! It’s fine I guess!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega chandelure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I mean… yeah. If you were to say “Hey, imagine what Mega Chandelure looks like”… this would be it, I think. It’s Chandelure. But Mega. Just like… a bigger chandelier. No surprises there. Don’t get me wrong, it’s rad. It’s just… yep. That’s Mega Chandelure, alright!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega chesnaught<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I wasn’t a fan of Chesnaught when X\/Y first came out, but it did grow on me a little, mostly because it was based on Glyptodonts and you know<\/em> I love anything prehistoric. It never felt exactly complete<\/em>, though, and this Mega perhaps finally brings its design to its conclusion. The spiky shields on its back can even become a mallet weapon, making this guy a seriously bulky grass knight. A green knight<\/em>, if you will.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega delphox<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oh maaaan<\/em>, the hate Delphox used to get. I still feel it every time I look at it. Everyone loved<\/em> Braixen but Delphox dropped the ball and it would pay for it forever<\/em>. Mega Delphox feels maybe like a compromise–taking a few elements from Braixen, as if to say we’re sowwy we ruined your furry gf<\/em>. But it also stands on its own, really leaning into that witchy aspect. Like Mega Chesnaught, this feels like it “completes” Delphox’s design, which also felt kinda not quite finished. Were these guys planned to Mega Evolve in the original X\/Y? Is that why their designs were a little lacking?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega greninja<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Confession: I really did not like Greninja when X\/Y first came out. I know, for shame. I wasn’t a fan of the tongue scarf, it was just gross to me. But Greninja rocketed to the top of popularity, and so naturally Pokemon gave it a lot of attention, and even I grew to like it as its personality shone through. Anyway, its Mega doesn’t really add much to it because I think people would be pretty upset if they “ruined” Greninja. I like the darker colours to imply ninja clothing, and the shuriken designs on the eyes is a nice touch. Also this guy’s upside-down!! What gives?!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega pyroar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oh… oh dear. You poor thing. Oh no. Look, I understand the mane design resembles a kanji meaning “flame”, and that’s pretty neat–and it is nice that both male and female Pyroar look the same, that’s a cool gender thing to do, but… oh dear. This looks like Sordward<\/a> all over again.
I used a Pyroar in my ZA playthrough, but rarely ever Mega evolved her. I couldn’t do that to her…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega floette<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I don’t really know how much this one counts as a new Mega, since it’s more of a story thing? Only AZ’s Floette can Mega evolve, and it plays into the climax story of the game which I don’t want to fully spoil. It’s… weird. The climax, and this Mega. I haven’t fully beaten all the post-game stuff, so I don’t know if this is a Mega you can even own??<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega malamar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Malamar is such a fun Pokemon, I love the flipped squid idea, and I love that it’s basically a cartoon villain Pokemon. The Mega goes even further into that role, complete with evil<\/em> shoulder pads, evil<\/em> hypnotic arms and its tentacles forming what looks like a big brain–that’s clearly evil<\/em>. This guy says mwahahaha<\/em> unprompted. I do prefer its original form more, but I appreciate the super-villainness of this Mega.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega barbaracle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I don’t think I’ve ever properly looked at this Pokemon’s name. Barbaracle?<\/em> I think I was just calling it Barbanackle<\/em> in my head. Anyway, this Pokemon is… weird. I don’t hate its design concept, but I think it was the colours that threw me off of it. Oddly, I think the Mega improves that by using that dark grey, it kinda brings it better together? The original is a very goofy mon, but its Mega is deadly serious<\/em>. And I can’t help but enjoy that more. Sorry, Barbaracle, I’ll treat you more seriously now. And remember your name better.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega dragalge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the things I loved with X\/Y introducing the Fairy type was that it opened it up for more Dragon types, since they were no longer the almighty powerful type. So we got really cool mons like Dragalge here. The Mega is… a lot. It’s kinda just Dragalge but with a big, pink, flowy hat. Is it meant to represent the kelp these sea dragons hide in? If so, the idea is there but I dunno… I think it doesn’t really add much to the already killer design.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega hawlucha<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

X\/Y made a pretty big deal out of Hawlucha, or at least it felt like it did? Mostly because it had an attack that did both Fighting and Flying<\/em> damage, and I thought that was going to be a new thing, these multi-type attacks… but then it kinda wasn’t. But hey, Hawlucha is always cool, so I’m very glad it finally got a Mega. And you might think it’s underwhelming, because it’s just Hawlucha in a more luchador get up, but no, that’s perfect. That’s all I’d ever want for Hawlucha.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega zygarde<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ehhhhh<\/em>… oh boy. This I guess also ties into the big climax of ZA, and I have mixed feelings on it all. First, I never really liked Zygarde’s “complete” form, I liked the original snake one. So this is of course based on the weird complete form, which is already a… ehh. It’s just… ehhhh<\/em>. It’s a big cannon. This game relied heavily on you just really thinking Zygarde was the coolest shit ever, but unfortunately, I don’t think that. Hell, I think its little “cells” are more interesting than Big Green Guy. Big Green Guy with a Gun. I’m not into it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega drampa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I love Drampa, a dragon that’s also my grandpa! And Mega Drampa is an angry<\/em> grandpa. Or is it??<\/em> It seems like Mega Evolution, for Drampa, actually restores its youth<\/em>. This guy’s a young spring chicken again! I think that’s actually a fascinating concept? Mega Evolution is kinda vaguely described as “unleashing the Pokemon’s power” which is like, what all<\/em> the gimmicky things do, but I do love when it really plays with the Pokemon’s concept more, like Kangaskan’s Mega using its baby to fight, or Sableye using its giant gem. This is a really cool idea, which then makes me a tad bit sad that most Megas are just “the Pokemon, but Cooler”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega falinks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the last of the officially released Megas in the base game of ZA. Don’t worry, I’ll tackle the others, too. This is also another awesome Pokemon, and the Mega is perfect–what’s better than a bunch of little guys? What about a bunch of little guys that form up to be a Big Guy? I absolutely love the one in the middle holding most of it up, with the strained expression. No!! Please help him!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

So these are all the Megas in the base game of ZA, but not a couple months after its release did it see a DLC, including more<\/em> Megas. I haven’t played the DLC because that means I have to chalk up an extra 30 bucks<\/em> for an already 80+ dollar game. Not to get into it, but yes, in good ol’ Canada, we’ve been having to pay upwards of 80 dollars for Switch games since its release. Now that’s even gone up with the Switch 2, where games go for anywhere around 100 dollars<\/em>. I’m sorry, I know there are good games in the mix, but I don’t believe there is any game in the world<\/em> that is worth 100 fucking dollars. Not even Pokemon. Especially not Pokemon, to be frank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway–Maybe I will eventually shill for this DLC, but at the moment I have no desire to. Regardless, there’s new Megas in this, so I’m gonna talk about them, even though I haven’t encountered them in-game. And that’s fine.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mega raichu x and y<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There’s two of these guys. Which… yeah. I guess. It is basically Pikachu, after all. Raichu really gets the Mega-prevolution treatment because, again, it’s Pikachu. I’m surprised they didn’t just make<\/em> Mega Pikachu? I mean, they made Mega Floette, they can do whatever they want. The first one is Mega Raichu X, and I think it looks a bit better, mostly because it retains more “Raichu”y-ness. The double Pikachu tails are also pretty cool. Mega Raichu Y, though, looks more like a Pikachu slapped with some random Raichu elements on it. I feel like poor Raichu is always overshadowed by its prevo, because it’s the mascot of the whole franchise<\/em>, and unfortunately even when it gets a Mega (or even TWO of them), it just can’t escape.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega chimecho<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another Pokemon I don’t think much about, honestly, but this is a neat Mega. Not only does it give it more Chimechos, but the shape of the golden parts resembles its prevolution… which I literally had to look up the name of because I forgot… Chingling,<\/em> right, that’s it. Looks like it also becomes Psychic\/Steel when it Mega Evolves, and I gotta say there’s not a lot of these new Megas that change or add typings, which is a shame. Anyway, this guy is pretty cool. Can’t imagine battling with it, every time it gets hit it would make such<\/em> a racket.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega absol z<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So not only are there new Megas, but new alternate<\/em> Megas. Absol already had a Mega from X\/Y, with a very angelic look. Z is the Shadow the Hedgehog version, and I say that with all the love in my heart. This thing is so gloriously edgy, it’s beautiful. Which is great, good for her. Also, it becomes Dark\/Ghost type, the edgiest of types. It apparently uses that red fluff\/wing\/claw thing to attack with, which is fun. I’m so glad you can choose between yuor devil or angle when it comes to Absol now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega staraptor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oh god what did they do to this bird?! Why has it seen hell?! Did they send it to war?! Pokemon, did you traumatize my bird!?<\/em> I like Staraptor a lot, and this is… It really feels like one of those Megas where they just kept adding elements to it to make it “cooler” but it’s, well. It’s a bit much<\/em>. Staraptor was plenty cool on its own, you didn’t need to make it all grizzled! Now that I’ve said that, though, it’s almost got a charm to it, and admittedly it’s grown on me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega garchomp z<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I guess this one isn’t fully released, yet? Or it doesn’t have official art. Oh well. Whenever I look at Garchomp in any shape or form, I think of my partner, who describes it as “always looking like it’s in pain.” This is not a creature that lives a pleasant existence. Strangely, compared to the other Z Megas, Garchomp Z is pretty toned down. It even loses<\/em> its Ground typing. I guess Gamefreak thought we needed a stripped down<\/em> Mega Garchomp?? Or a Garchomp that doesn’t die to Ice attacks as fast. This falls into my weird feelings again about powerful Pokemon getting Megas. As if Garchomp needed one, let alone two.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega lucario z<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This was the first shown “Z” Mega, showcasing that even Pokemon already with Megas can still get new ones! I don’t mind that per se, but there are so many Pokemon begging to have Megas, so did these guys really need another<\/em> one? Lucario Z is working that pretty boy look, though I’m very mixed on a lot of the design elements here. It’s hard to really pin down what is going on. It took me a good minute to realize that shape at the bottom left is its tail? But it also has a big yellow floof that could be a tail? And the colours are… Hrm. I just don’t know about this one, guys. I don’t hate it, but I don’t think it was really needed<\/em>, y’know?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega heatran<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Okay, phew, we’re out of the Z Megas, back to our regular schedule. This guy? I like this guy. He’s a big blobby lava monster. I wonder exactly how he might get around because I think the back legs are… melted?? But who doesn’t love a blobby lava monster?? That like, no doubt vomits lava. There’s no way he doesn’t. Look at him. That’s a vomiting-lava-guy if I ever saw one.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega darkrai<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wow<\/em>, what?? This thing is wild<\/em>. I probably wouldn’t have even guessed it was Darkrai. Man, I love this, it’s freaky<\/em>. I feel like it totally twists and corrupts everything about Darkrai, which only makes sense as the literal nightmare Pokemon<\/em>. Like, I was almost repulsed by it when I first saw it, but I think that’s the whole idea, so it sure did its job. It also kinda looks like a big eye.
Looking at it more, though, I really can’t stop seeing those long arms wiggling around like one of those inflatable wiggle dudes. And that’s even better.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega golurk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This guy’s awesome! Wow! This is really just Golurk Unleashed!! <\/em>There’s no more lights in its body, it’s all outside, including the crazy wings?? On its back? It can also fire off its fists like a rocket launcher. Again, an inventive way of playing with Mega Evolution as a concept–the body of the Pokemon remains pretty much the same, but it’s the energy inside <\/em>that gets all the juiced up power, and this is how it manifests. Cool!!!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega meowstic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I’m gonna be real–I never liked Meowstic much at all. It always struck me as a very weird design with too much going on, muddying the one cool thing about it, which was the eyes under its ears. I also didn’t understand the gender dimorphism, but it is<\/em> cool how once again we have a Mega that both genders turn into, which manifests as a chimera-effect we see sometimes in nature. It’s pretty neat. I just wish it was on a different Pokemon. The ears open and the regular eyes closed also give this a very alien looking appearance, which is off-putting but kinda neat. I’m just–again–not jazzed about Meowstic. I’m sorry!!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega crabominable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ohhhh mannn<\/em> I’m trying not to be so negative here, I really am! It just doesn’t help when the base Pokemon was already a weird design. I get the fun play on yeti crabs they were doing with this guy, but it was just so… ehh<\/em>. And this Mega doesn’t really improve much, it’s just. Crabominable. But more. If you like this guy, you probably like this Mega! So like, good for that. I’m a little sad it doesn’t have any prevolution traits, because Crabrawler was such a fun design, but none of it really carried over into its evolution…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega golisopod<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oh, my beloved Bugs. Golisopod was already sick as hell, it really did not require a Mega, but I appreciate this one. It doesn’t damper Golisopod’s cool factor, or try to upstage it, but rather give it another angle. It looks a lot like some alien spaceship or vehicle, reminding me of those things from Star Wars. You know, from the prequels? The circular droids that go pew pew? Man, sorry to compare you to the prequels, Golispod. I promise it was one of the better parts of the prequels. I promise…<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega magearna<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Huh…? Magearna? What’s Magearna. Like, okay, I did know of this thing. But like… huh?<\/em> Did anyone even care about Magearna? I dunno. By the end of X\/Y, I really started to fall off the extra legends they tacked on, where you had to go to an EB Games and downlo–wait, do they even do<\/em> that anymore? Is it all online now? Anyway–Hoopa, Volcanion, this thing, they just kinda blend together for me in a big shrug. It exists. I guess. And now it has a Mega. I guess.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega zeraora<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

See? Here’s another legendary tacked on at the end of… uh… Sun\/Moon, I think? Even on its release, I could only think of how much this was really trying to cash in on the Lucario hype. It’s basically Lucario, but a cat. And its Mega is even trying a little too hard, making it all cool and edgy and dark. Sorry, you are no Absol Z to me. You are a young teen trying to be so cool it’s backfiring on you. I’m sorry. You’re allowed to be this way, of course. Everyone grows up in different ways. In the end, I won’t tell you what to do, Zeraora. I’m not your mom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega scovillain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oh my god. This Mega… it hurts me. It hurts me so deeply. Not because it’s bad, because it’s incredible<\/em>. Scovillain was a neat Pokemon, but it never felt fully realized. But here–here,<\/em> it is. This adds just enough to the design to make it absolutely perfect. The pepper seeds as hair and spikes. The suit. The hot pepper tie<\/em>. I am so sad. Just how everyone was sad about Mega Banette, I am sad this is only just a Mega, and not a permanent evolution. It should be. I want this thing to permanently exist<\/em>. No, no no, I can’t look at it. I just can’t.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega glimmora<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

WOW LOOK AT THAT SNOOT!! Glimmora is a pretty interesting Pokemon from the newest gen that I liked a whole bunch!! Its Mega basically separates the “petals” and spreads its whole design out. And that’s it! No added bobs and whistles to this guy, just needed some extra space. I can respect that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega tatsugiri<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oh yeah this guy! Or guys…? This Pokemon has multiple forms, but when you Mega evolve it, they all group up, with the one your guy is in the middle. It’s just… well, it’s all three of ’em. There they are! In a little sushi collection. I like how the bottom makes the Mega Evolution symbol!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mega baxcalibur<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And here we are! As of this post, this is the final new Mega revealed in the series. And it’s the latest pseudo-legendary, the Ice\/Dragon Baxcalibur. Like a bunch of these Megas, I think this is an improvement needed on the original design, because it felt a little bland, honestly. The extra details on this really make the design stand out. Kinda a shame, really, as once again this is only a Mega, and who knows how long Megas are gonna last in the series. Are they sticking around this time? Or is poor Baxcalibur slated to be naked again for the near future?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Well, there you have it. A bunch of Mega designs, and my very important, very objectively correct thoughts on them. It’s interesting Pokemon brought them back–and are going all in, not just with Legends ZA but in the TCG and other spin-offs. On one hand, it’s nice to see–on the other, I can’t help but miserably think that this was a whole feature that they took away<\/em> for almost a decade, and are parading back like it’s celebration. Are Z-Moves gonna be next? Acting like it’s a grand return of a cool feature? Is this the new cycle we’re gonna be in–instead of remakes, it’s just gimmicks leaving and coming back? Oh god am I just going to be complaining<\/em> about Pokemon forever? Is that all that my future holds? What am I doing?!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truthfully–I feel like the reintroduction of Megas might have to do with that new Pokemon Champions thing they’re planning. If Champions is what everyone is saying it is, a new permanent place for competitive battling that’s separate from the mainline games, then maybe now was the best time to bring back Megas. And maybe Megas will<\/em> stay, if not in the mainline games, but at least competitively in Champions. That’s what I’m guessing, anyway. Which, if that is the case, that’s a well-enough compromise. Time will tell how it all unfolds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
